Interesting post. I also heard once that Picasso avoided visiting museums, although the influence of many classic great masters he studied during his formative years (like El Greco) were clear, and he obviously had a lot of contact with his painter contemporaries (they say his minotaur theme came from his contact with the surrealists who often used it as their symbol.) He never took a side during any of the wars, including the Spanish Civil War, which people said had more to do with cowardice than principles.

It looks to me like he didn't like being bound by anything-- neither in his personal nor painterly life. Maybe denying that music was an influence was just another way of maintaining his renegade persona...?

You've inspired me to read a Picasso biography that I've had sitting on my shelf for a while!
